Welcome to Pine Class (Year 3)
Spring Term 1 & 2 - 2018
Happy New Year! Welcome back to school. Our topic this term is Stone Age to Iron Age, we recommend you and your child take a look at the internet where there is lots of information.
After plotting on a timeline we will study how people lived and what their houses were like. We will generate questions and theories about what people hunted and gathered in the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods and about what life was like at Star Carr. We will carry out research to find this out. We will examine the changes that agriculture caused in the way people lived. We will compare Mesolithic and Neolithic axes – how would the Neolithic axe have made life easier? We will ask was life harder in the Mesolithic or the Neolithic times? We will ask questions and hypotheses about Skara Brae and research the answers. We will create a display of the models with written labels.
We will ask questions about Stonehenge and research the answers. We will learn more about the monument we see today and how it does not look as it was originally intended. We will look at the materials used in the construction of Stonehenge.
We are hoping to arrange a themed day with year 4, we shall send you more details as soon as possible.
In English we will be studying: A Novel a Theme, instructions, Myths and Legends, Report Writing & Poetry
Maths – Problem solving, Multiplication and Division including using formal written methods, Fractions, Statistics, 2d and 3d shapes, Measures – including time. (We will also recap on all the learning that happened during the Autumn term)
Science – Forces and magnets, Light
Computing – the children will develop their computing skills by using logical reasoning, selection, and repetition in programs. They will use Scratch and Purple Mash software to design, write and debug programs and use logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work. We are programmers
We are bug fixers
D&T and Art - Improve mastery of art and design techniques, Produce creative work, exploring the ideas and recording their experiences, Designing pouch/ purses - Textiles, Cave drawings, painting and sculptures – stone age artefacts.
Please could we ask that you send in an old shirt or apron for your child to wear during these sessions to protect their uniforms. Your child may keep this in their locker in a plastic bag, ready for when we have our art sessions. Thank you in advance!
Music – Recorders skills will continue to be developed, this term we will be focusing on moving from note B to Notes A and G. Year 3 will also have a composer focus in term 4. They will be developing creative musical responses to Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, focusing on themes and motifs within the piece.
Please ensure that their recorder and books are in school every Friday.
RE – The life of Jesus
PSHE - going for goals and ‘Good to be me’
P.E. –We will be working on Real PE unit one – personal skills and gymnastics, dance, striking and fielding games gymnastics. PE will be on Mondays and Fridays but it is helpful to have PE kits in school at all times. Please remember to take your child’s earrings out on PE days and fasten up any long hair/long fringes with soft hair bands, no clips please. Parents of girls - remember to include a pair of socks if your child wears tights. If your child is unable to remove their own earrings they will be excluded from PE for health and safety reasons. PE kit will be sent home regularly for washing. Please ensure all clothing (particularly sweatshirts and cardigans) PE kits and footwear is clearly labelled.
Library: Our library time is Thursday afternoons. Children can take out a maximum of two books and keep them for two weeks. Please encourage your child to read their library books and return both books regularly.
Water bottles: May we request that you provide your child with a water bottle to use in class at all times.
Homework: Please make sure your child’s reading book and record are at school every day for quiet reading sessions and reading to adult helpers. We continually review the levels the children are reading at.
Each week the children will bring home a Maths activity and a Reading or Writing activity. This will be sent home in their homework book on Thursday and returned on a Tuesday. They will also receive extra times table practice at various times in the year. Please sign their homework sheet and make a comment if necessary.
Spelling: The children will continue to bring home a spelling journal and they will work on a new list each week. They will be tested every Wednesday and they will bring their journals home again every Thursday.
Reading: Children will be expected to read and change their school reading book regularly, recording their reading in their diaries. The children should take two books at a time - one fiction and one non-fiction.
Parent’s evenings: We would like the opportunity to meet with you and discuss your child’s needs and progress. Two evenings are to be held on 6th and 7th February 2018. However, if you wish to discuss your child’s learning before this, or at any time, you are welcome to make an appointment.
Each Year 3 child has been assigned a locker but as space is limited we do request that they do not bring in overly large bags as once their winter coat and P.E. kits are in it will be a bit of a tight fit! We shall be asking that the children keep their personal pencil cases in their drawers as all equipment they require shall be provided by school and kept on tables.
All Key Stage 2 children are encouraged to bring in a piece of fruit/vegetable for their morning break as this helps towards their ‘5-a-day’. Our school is proud to be an Enhanced Healthy School and thank parents/carers for supporting us with this.
