Year 5 Newsletter

Term 1 & 2 2019/2020

Welcome back, I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer break and is looking forward to the new term ahead.  I am very pleased to be working alongside Mrs Christie this year. Below, I have outlined what your children will be studying in class during the Autumn term.

Our topic for this term is entitled ‘Jurassic Park’. We will be focusing on evolution and inheritance, famous palaeontologists and how fossils are formed and discovered.

English

  • Narrative – This year we will start by focusing on our Talk for Writing work for a selection of stories by Pie Corbett.  The children will create their own Flash Forward Stories and Cumulative tales.
  • Non-Fiction – The children will be studying recount letter writing. We will also be looking at Report writing.
  • Poetry – Poetry and riddles based on a variety of poetic genres.

Maths

  • Each morning our class will practise that week’s Maths objectives using the online Mini-Maths activities.
  • Place Value and Number. This term we will mainly focus on children’s understanding of numbers up to one million. This includes reading, ordering and comparing 4 – 6 digit numbers as well as rounding these accurately. We will also work with negative numbers and Roman numerals.
  • Later on in the term, we will also study calculation strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children will also work on statistics, perimeter, and area.
  • Mental Maths. Every week the children will continue practising their mental calculation skills including times tables. It goes without saying that ALL pupils should be fluent in their times tables up to 12 x 12, in random order. With that in mind, I urge you to encourage your son/daughter to practise them every night for a few minutes preferably making links with their related division facts.

Computing- The children will be researching information for their Jurassic Park topic work using a variety of online sources. There will also be learning about E-Safety.

Science – We will be studying rocks and fossils and identifying how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution.

Music – Lessons will be on a Friday afternoon with Mr Hole.

French- French will be taught on alternate Fridays by Mr Hollingshurst.

Religious Education – This term we will be learning how Religious charities help people all around the world.

P.E. – We will continue to develop our personal skills in Real PE and explore further invasion games. Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please remember to take your child’s earrings out on PE days and fasten up any long hair/long fringes with soft hair bands, no clips please. Parents of girls - remember to include a pair of socks if your child wears tights. If your child is unable to remove their own earrings, they will be excluded from PE for health and safety reasons. PE kits will be sent home regularly for washing.

Please ensure all clothing (particularly sweatshirts and cardigans) PE kit and footwear is clearly labelled.

Homework: Homework is given on a Thursday to be returned the following Tuesday. Please encourage your children to aim for high levels of presentation, as with any other schoolwork. We expect children to be reading their school reading book for at least ten minutes every day and recording this in their reading record. Please ensure your child does this and encourage them to read any other books, magazines, comics, etc. that they enjoy.

Spelling: The children will continue to bring home a spelling folder and they will work on a new list each week. There will be a test every Wednesday.

Library: The library is open to the children each week day morning and we encourage them to make use of this time to exchange their library books. Please remind your child that they need to read across a wide range of genres, from fiction to non-fiction and poetry.

Water bottles: May we request that you provide your child with a labelled water bottle to use in class at all times.

Healthy School

All Key Stage 2 children are encouraged to bring in a piece of fruit/vegetable for their morning break as this helps towards their ‘5-a-day’. Our school is proud to be an Enhanced Healthy School and thank parents/carers for supporting us with this.

PARENT’S EVENINGS

I would like the opportunity to meet with you and discuss your child’s needs and progress. Two evenings are to be held on the 16th and 17th October. However, if you wish to discuss your child’s learning before this, or at any other time, you are welcome to make an appointment. If you need to speak with me before school please ask at the school office first, thank you.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in contact with me.
