Term 1 & 2 2018/2019

Welcome back, I hope everyone has had a wonderful Summer break and is looking forward to the new term ahead. I am very pleased to be working alongside Mrs Still and would like to welcome Mrs Kraftl to our class. Below, I have outlined what your children will be studying in class during the Autumn term.

Our topic for this term is focused on investigating America. We will look at the continents of North and South America including aspects of their Geography, History, artistic styles and lifestyles.

English

  • Narrative – This year we will start by focusing on our Talk for Writing work for a selection of stories by Pie Corbett. The children will create their own Warning Stories and stories set in the past.
  • Non-Fiction – Biographies and Autobiographies. We will also be looking at diary writing.
  • Poetry – Poetry based on the work of a selection of American poets.

Maths

  • Place Value and Number. This term we will mainly focus on children’s understanding of numbers up to one million. This includes reading, writing and comparing 4 – 6 digit numbers as well as rounding these accurately. We will also work with negative numbers and Roman numerals.
  • Later in term 2, we will also study calculation strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Mental Maths. Every week, all of the children will continue practising their mental calculation skills including times tables.

Computing- The children will be researching information for their America topic work using a variety of online sources. There will also be learning about E-Safety.

Science – Electricity, with a link to Thomas Edison. We will also be studying Light and shadow.

Music – Lessons will be on a Friday afternoon with Mrs Regan.

RE – This term we will be completing work from a whole school unit on Incarnation which will link to Christmas.

French - Friday afternoons with Madame Kernick

PSHE/P4C – We will be working from our PSHE Scheme, Jigsaw. The first unit is called ‘Good to be in my world’ and focuses on building children’s self-esteem and pride in themselves within their environment.

P.E. – We will continue to develop our personal skills in Real PE and also explore further invasion games. Our PE days are Mondays and Wednesdays. Please remember to take your child’s earrings out on PE days and fasten up any long hair/long fringes with soft hair bands, no clips please. Parents of girls - remember to include a pair of socks if your child wears tights. If your child is unable to remove their own earrings they will be excluded from PE for health and safety reasons. PE kits will be sent home regularly for washing.

Please ensure all clothing (particularly sweatshirts and cardigans) PE kits and footwear is clearly labelled.

Homework: Homework is given on a Tuesday to be returned the following Monday. Please encourage your children to aim for high levels of presentation, as with any other schoolwork. We expect children to be reading their school reading book for at least ten minutes every day and recording this in their reading record. Please ensure your child does this and encourage them to read any other books, magazines, comics, etc. that they enjoy.

Spelling: The children will continue to bring home a spelling folder and they will work on a new list each week. They will be tested every Wednesday.

Library: The library is open to the children each week day morning and we encourage them to make use of this time to exchange their library books. Please remind your child that they need to read across a wide range of genres, from fiction to non-fiction and poetry.

Water bottles: May we request that you provide your child with a labelled water bottle to use in class at all times.

Assembly: Celebration assembly will continue to be held on Thursday afternoons at 2.50pm and parents and carers are invited to join us. We shall have a Class Assembly after Christmas and will inform parents when the date is chosen. Please refer to our assembly schedule on our school website.

Parent’s Evenings

I would like to invite you to Parent’s Evenings on the 17th and 18th October, appointment request letters will be sent nearer to the date.

Healthy School

All Key Stage 2 children are encouraged to bring in a piece of fruit/vegetable for their morning break as this helps towards their ‘5-a-day’. Our school is proud to be an Enhanced Healthy School and thank parents/carers for supporting us with this.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me.
