Term 3 & 4 2019

Happy New Year! I hope everyone has had a lovely Christmas break and is looking forward to the new term ahead. Mrs Still, Mrs Kraftl and I would like to thank you for the wonderful presents and cards we received before the Christmas holiday; they were very much appreciated. Below, I have outlined what your children will be studying in class during the Spring term.

Our topic for this term is called ‘Close Encounters’. This will be a space themed topic were we will look at the planets, space travel and exploration, imaginary worlds and lots more.

  • Narrative – Our Talk for Writing work will include work on ‘Overcoming the monster’ and ‘Transformations’
  • Non-Fiction – A variety of Persuasion and Explanation writing tasks.
  • Poetry – Poetry based around the theme of Space.

  • Place Value and Number. This term we will mainly focus on children’s understanding of multiplication and division before moving onto Fractions. This will include work on equivalent fractions, writing decimal numbers as fractions, adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions and working with improper fractions and mixed numbers.
  • Later in term 4, we will also study decimals and percentages.
  • Mental Maths. Every week, all of the children will continue practising their mental calculation skills including times tables.

Computing- The children will be researching information for their Close Encounters topic work using a variety of online sources. They will also be studying a variety of Data Handling including spreadsheets.

Science – Properties and changes of materials and Earth and Space.

Music – Lessons will be on a Friday afternoon with Mrs Regan.

RE – This term we will be completing work on Creation and Science; are they conflicting or complementary? We will also be doing work on the Easter story.

French - Friday afternoons with Madame Kernick.

PSHE/P4C – We will be working from our PSHE Scheme, Jigsaw. The next unit is called Dreams and Goals which focusses on the children’s plans for the future and how they could achieve these.

P.E. – We will continue to develop our personal skills in Real PE and also explore further invasion games. Our PE days are Mondays and Wednesdays. Kit suitable for outdoor games will be required this term. Please remember to take your child’s earrings out on PE days and fasten up any long hair/long fringes with soft hair bands, no clips please. Parents of girls - remember to include a pair of socks if your child wears tights. If your child is unable to remove their own earrings they will be excluded from PE for health and safety reasons. PE kits will be sent home regularly for washing.

Please ensure all clothing (particularly sweatshirts and cardigans) PE kits and footwear is clearly labelled.

Homework: Homework is given on a Thursday to be returned the following Tuesday. Please encourage your children to aim for high levels of presentation, as with any other schoolwork. We expect children to be reading their school reading book for at least ten minutes every day and recording this in their reading record. Please ensure your child does this and encourage them to read any other books, magazines, comics, etc. that they enjoy.

Spelling: The children will continue to bring home a spelling folder and they will work on a new list each week. They will be tested every Wednesday.

Library: The library is open to the children each week day morning and we encourage them to make use of this time to exchange their library books. Please remind your child that they need to read across a wide range of genres, from fiction to non-fiction and poetry.

Water bottles: May we request that you provide your child with a labelled water bottle to use in class at all times.

Assembly: Celebration assembly will continue to be held on Thursday afternoons at 2.50pm and parents and carers are invited to join us.

Parent’s Evenings

I would like to invite you to Parent’s Evenings on the 13th and 14th February, appointment request letters will be sent nearer to the date.

Healthy School

All Key Stage 2 children are encouraged to bring in a piece of fruit/vegetable for their morning break as this helps towards their ‘5-a-day’. Our school is proud to be an Enhanced Healthy School and thank parents/carers for supporting us with this.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me.
