Summer Term 5 & 6 - 2018

Welcome back to school, I hope you all had a lovely Easter holiday. My name is Jim Ager and I am proud to be the new Year 5 teacher at Weldon CE Primary. I am really looking forward to working with you and your children. Please do not hesitate to come and see me if you wish to discuss anything.

Our topic this term is The Maya Civilization. We will explore where and when the remains of the Mayan civilisation were discovered, how the Mayans civilisation developed over time, the city states of the Mayans and how society was organised. We will also study Mayan religion and beliefs, find out about everyday life for the Mayan people and explore Mayan writing and calendars. The topic will finish with the decline of the Mayan civilisation.

In English we will be studying several novels, writing our own stories and exploring a range of non-fiction texts, including non-chronological reports

Maths – Problem solving, Multiplication and Division including using mental and formal written methods, Fractions, 2d and 3d shapes, angles and Measures – including time, volume, area and perimeter

Science – Animals, including humans and Irreversible changes

Computing – The children will develop their ICT skills alongside their topics this term, including research into the Maya Civilization, presenting Science and English work and completing e-safety tasks

D&T and Art - Studying and creating Mayan masks, murals and temples

RE – Beliefs and Actions in the World

PSHERelationships and ‘Changing Me’

P.E. We will be working on striking and fielding games and working with the School Sport Partnership to work on the Real PE scheme. PE will be on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays but it is helpful to have PE kits in school at all times. Please remember to take your child’s earrings out on PE days and fasten up any long hair/long fringes with soft hair bands, no clips please. Parents of girls - remember to include a pair of socks if your child wears tights. If your child is unable to remove their own earrings they will be excluded from PE for health and safety reasons. PE kit will be sent home regularly for washing. Please ensure all clothing (particularly sweatshirts and cardigans) PE kits and footwear is clearly labelled.

Library: Our library time is Tuesday afternoons. Children can take out a maximum of two books and keep them for two weeks. Please encourage your child to read their library books and return both books regularly

Water bottles: May we request that you provide your child with a water bottle to use in class at all times.

Homework: Maths and English revision tasks will be coming home soon. These will be given out on a Thursday, due back in the following Tuesday

Spelling: The children will bring home a spelling journal and they will work on a new list each week. They will be tested every Wednesday and they will bring their journals home again every Thursday

Reading: Children will be expected to read and change their school reading book regularly, recording their reading in their diaries. The children should take two books at a time - one fiction and one non-fiction

Assemblies:

Celebration Assemblies will continue to be held on Thursdays at 3pm, and Singing Assemblies are every other Friday at 9.00am. Parents/Carers are welcome to attend these assemblies, please refer to our school website for more information.

Parent’s Evening:

I would like to invite you to an Open Parents’ Evening on Wednesday 11th July 2018. Here you will have the opportunity to look at your child’s work for the year and reflect on all of their achievements.

Healthy School

All Key Stage 2 children are encouraged to bring in a piece of fruit/vegetable for their morning break as this helps towards their ‘5-a-day’. Our school is proud to be an Enhanced Healthy School and thank parents/carers for supporting us with this.
